Snake Unblocked: The Methods That Still Work, and the One Everyone Still Teaches

Short answer first: you can still play snake on a locked-down Chromebook, but not the way most guides tell you to. The famous bookmark trick is dead. Three things work instead — a hosted mod site, a userscript, or a browser portal that never needed a mod at all.

The method that no longer works

Download more menu.html from the Google Snake custom-menu project on GitHub. Import that file as a bookmark. Open Google Snake. Click the bookmark. Extra skins, backgrounds and map sizes were supposed to appear.

They don't. The project's own repository now carries a warning at the top: the bookmark no longer works, and a browser extension is required. The explanation is narrow and worth knowing. Google moved the whole snake codebase inside an immediately invoked function expression, so the old trick — reaching in and overriding a function while the game is already running — has nothing left to grab. A userscript gets around this because it fires the instant the page loads, before the snake code executes. Bookmarks arrive after the code has run. Userscripts arrive before it.

If a tutorial walks you through importing more menu.html, it is recycling a workflow the maintainers themselves retired. The steps still read fine. They just don't do anything.

Route 1: the hosted mod site

Go to googlesnakemods.com. Click play. You land on a modded build of Google Snake, and a panel appears in the bottom-right corner where you choose which mod to run. No file, no import, no extension. This is what the project's 2024 update points people to, and it is the shortest path from a blocked browser to a playable snake.

Route 2: the userscript

When you want the mods inside real Google Snake rather than on someone else's build, install a userscript manager first. Tampermonkey is the recommended one, and it matters that you use it — Greasemonkey will not work here. Then pick the install link that matches how you launch the game. If you only ever play on the standalone page, google.com/fbx?fbx=snake_arcade, take the fbx-only build. If you type the word "snake" into Google and play from the search result, take the standard build. If neither fires, there is a third build that runs on every Google search page.

The mods you get are not cosmetic. The current set includes More Menu, a Level Editor, Mouse Mode, Pudding and More Pudding, a Visibility mod and a Chess mod. A Multiplayer mod landed as v13 on 3 September 2026, which tells you the project is still being maintained rather than abandoned.

The small details nobody writes down

Two of the circulating walkthroughs disagree about almost everything, and the disagreements are where the time gets lost.

Where the file lives: one guide says the link is in the description of a GitHub page you already have. Another says search google snake on GitHub and click the first result. A third says search google snake menu mod on Google and take the top link. All three end at the same repository; only one of them is still worth following.

How the bookmark gets in: one guide imports through chrome://bookmarks. Another goes three-dots, Bookmarks, Bookmark manager, Import bookmarks, then Recent. A third just drags the "More Menu Stuff" link straight onto the bookmarks bar. Drag-and-drop is the only one that never touches a file picker.

What happens after you click: one guide promises the options unlock instantly. Another says it will not show up automatically at all — you have to open the "More Menu Stuff" folder and wait three to five seconds. The second guide is the honest one.

The bar itself: if your bookmarks bar is invisible, press Ctrl+Shift+B. That keystroke appears in exactly one of the guides and it is the step people miss most often, because a hidden bar makes the whole method look broken.

Route 3: browser portals, and what they actually cost you

Portal sites skip the mod entirely. Reds Exploits Corner bundles unblocked games, apps and a proxy in one place and is navigated through GitHub's own file widgets; its last commit is 2 February 2023, and it credits two other open projects for its library. Unblocked Games Premium is the better-known name — the site and a Chrome extension share it. The extension is worth a warning: it is 421 KiB, last updated 6 May 2024, and all it does is change the site's background colour. It is not a game launcher, and nobody should install it expecting one.

Expect breakage. Portal libraries are uneven by nature — knock-off Minecraft builds that simply refuse to run, snipers in a game with no snipers, titles that hang on the loading screen while you wait. That is not a sign you did something wrong. It is the baseline.

The school-safe option

If the goal is snake during a lesson rather than snake against the filter, Blooket ships a solo mode called Snake Escape. You answer a question from a question set, then steer a snake that eats dragon fruit and grows faster as it goes. Adventure mode walks you through levels with an exit gate that opens once your snake hits the required length; Endless mode drops the gate and just asks how long you survive. Controls are arrow keys or WASD on a desktop and swipes on a phone. It is solo only, and the expected session runs seven minutes or more. It is a snake game a teacher can watch you play without objecting, which is a different kind of unblocked.

The short version

Stop importing more menu.html; the code change that killed it is not reversible. Use the hosted mod site if you want speed, the userscript if you want mods in real Google Snake, and a portal if you want a hundred games instead of one. Press Ctrl+Shift+B when the bar disappears. And when a portal game freezes, remember that the people who make these sites are usually one person with a hobby, not a studio.
